Meet Alison Carter, Managing Director of No Place Like Home
​
Just before their Golden Wedding Anniversary in 2008, Alison’s parents’ lives were overturned by a diagnosis of vascular dementia for her father. Her parents' experience was motivation for Alison to completely change course in her career to establish a new support service to help people continue to live a better quality later life with a particular focus on people affected by dementia.

Inspired by her mother's imagination, resourcefulness and patience in caring for her father, Alison’s aim was to create a new genre of later life support service focused on finding ways – whatever these may be – of enhancing her clients’ quality and enjoyment of life. Solutions are custom-built for each person according to their needs and interests.

In early 2013, Alison founded No Place Like Home bespoke companionship and care service which supports a wonderful group of like-minded clients.

Alison, an Oxford graduate and Royal Society of Arts fellow, is keen to share the learning of her new enterprise as widely as possible and to contribute to the ongoing debate on the future of elderly care in England. Alison passionately believes that by investing in far higher calibre care, quality of life will be significantly improved for individual clients and savings will be made to the public purse through reducing acute hospital admissions.
Leslie also took an active interest in Alison’s business, bringing her professional health expertise as a former pharmacist as well as her personal experience of caring for her parents and then her husband. Leslie’s insights as both health professional and as John’s wonderful carer proved absolutely invaluable to the way in which the company was established and continues to develop.
Alison’s business career has spanned both private and public sector organisations. Having gained rapid promotions in recognition of her business management and leadership skills, Alison moved from a decade in global language services ​to the public sector.

Here Alison thrived on making a difference to the county of Kent and was recognised in particular for her passion for people. Whilst bringing up her family, Alison completed a PhD and also taught at Canterbury Christ Church University’s Business School. Alison has since turned her considerable business expertise towards developing No Place Like Home. Alison is also an Alzheimer's Society Ambassador and Dementia Friends' Champion, a member of Kent County Council's Dementia Action Alliance, Founder and Chair of Dementia Action Alliance Faversham (now Swale) and Co-Chair of Dementia Action Alliance Canterbury and Ashford. Alison is a Community Speaker and Champion for Alzheimer's Research UK and is often asked to speak at national events such as the annual Alzheimer's Show.

Alison regularly talks to groups about providing care for loved ones at home - especially where a person is affected in later life by dementia. In 2015, Alison and her mother were approached by Alzheimer's Research UK to produce a short film on home care for the NHS Choices website.
